Can COVID-19 Cause Erectile Dysfunction In Men? – Studies suggests that there are some negative effects on sexual health due to coronavirus. One research is now throwing light on the effects of the virus on men’s sexual and reproductive health. It was found that COVID-19 may be associated with erectile dysfunction (ED). here are three factors that can cause the onset ED in men who have had the infection:
- Vascular effects: Erectile function is a predictor of heart disease and the vascular system and reproductive system are also connected. COVID-19 can also cause hyperinflammation throughout the body, especially in the heart and surrounding muscles and this can cause the blood supply to the penis to be narrowed or blocked as a result of a new or worsened vascular condition caused by the virus.
- Psychological impact: Stress, anxiety and depression caused by the pandemic can lead to sexual dysfunction because sexual activity is associated with mental health.
- Overall health deterioration: Men with poor health are at greater risk of developing Erectile Dysfunction and for having COVID-19 because ED is a symptom of an underlying condition.
“Erectile dysfunction can be a marker of overall health,” explains urologist Ryan Berglund, MD. “So particularly for young and healthy people who abruptly develop erectile dysfunction, and especially after having COVID-19, this can be a sign of something more serious going on.”
Potential testicular damage can also occur following an infection with COVID-19 as the study suggests. But actually didn’t state if the damage is permanent, temporary or if it can affect fertility. Age is also important for consideration as it’s a risk factor for developing both ED and COVID-19.
